How Bulldog works
Bulldog is a stock market game played with play money. Trade real US stocks and ETFs at real prices, try to beat the S&P 500, and compete with friends in leagues. Nothing here is real money or investment advice.
1. Your money
- Every player starts with a personal portfolio of $100,000 in play money.
- Each league gives you a separate, fresh portfolio with the league's starting cash (usually $100,000). Your personal portfolio and each league portfolio never mix: trades in one don't affect the others.
- Play money has no cash value and can't be withdrawn, sold or exchanged.
2. What you can trade
- US-listed common stocks and ETFs on NYSE, Nasdaq, NYSE American, NYSE Arca and Cboe.
- Whole shares only. No short selling, options, margin, crypto or fractional shares.
- Stocks priced under $1 can't be bought (they're easy to manipulate).
- No commissions or fees.
3. Prices
- Prices come from the IEX exchange ("IEX Delayed Data") and update about every 30 seconds while the market is open. They can differ slightly from prices on other sites.
- Some less-traded stocks don't trade on IEX every day and may show an older price.
- Outside market hours, the latest closing price is shown.
4. Placing orders and how they fill
- You can place orders any time. They only fill while the US market is open: 9:30 AM–4:00 PM Eastern, on trading days.
- The 3-minute rule: an order fills at the first price stamped at least 3 minutes after you placed it. That way nobody can trade on a price they've already seen elsewhere.
- Orders placed after 3:57 PM Eastern, on weekends or on holidays fill shortly after the next market open.
- Cancelling: you can cancel a pending order during its first 3 minutes. After that it's locked in and will fill.
- Buys are shrunk to what your cash covers at the fill price, or rejected if you can't afford a single share. Sells can't exceed the shares you own.
5. Scoring
- Your score is your % return: how much your portfolio has grown or shrunk since you started, counting both stocks you still own and gains or losses from stocks you sold.
- Your personal portfolio is compared with the S&P 500 from the day you joined.
6. Leagues
- Open Leagues: tap "Join an Open League" to be placed in the newest public league. Each holds up to 10 players, gives everyone $100,000 and lasts 1 month. When one fills up, the next player starts a new one.
- Private leagues are for friends and joined with an invite link or 8-character code. Creating one is part of Bulldog Pro (coming soon); anyone can join one.
- Everyone is ranked by % return since they joined, so it's fair whenever you join. Ties go to whoever joined first.
- You can join any time before a league ends. Trading opens on its start date and closes when it ends.
- Free accounts can be in up to 3 upcoming or active leagues at once. Finished leagues don't count.
- Private league owners can set the starting cash, dates and an optional max position size (for example, no single stock over 25% of your portfolio when buying).
- The leaderboard shows rank changes since the last close (▲▼) and 🔥 streaks for players up several days in a row.
7. Badges
Badges light up when you hit milestones: your first trade, beating the S&P 500, a hot week, owning 5+ stocks, a big winning sale, growing a portfolio 10%, holding a stock for 30 days, joining a league, and winning one. Some badges show what is true right now, so they can go dark again (for example, if the S&P 500 passes you).
8. Fair play
- One account per person. No bots, scripts or automated trading.
- Don't exploit bugs or price glitches. We may reverse trades caused by errors or bad data.
- Keep chat, usernames and league names friendly. No harassment, hate, spam or impersonation.
- Breaking the rules can lead to removal from leagues or account suspension.
